There are two categories of archive collections:
Α) archive of original documents:
In brief, this archive consists of Manuscript, Graphic (Postcards and Lithographs-Posters), Photographic and Cartographic material.
The Manuscript category comprises the collections of: Eleftherios K. Venizelos, Klearhos Markantonakis, Elena Venizelou, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Haralambos Ligounis, “Various”, Sophocles Venizelos, Emm. N. Georgakakis, Georgios Bousios, Petros I. Fikioris, “Campaign and Destruction of Asia Minor”, Dimitrios Bakas, the Liberal Party.
The Graphic material collection comprises the categories: i) Archive of postcards: Eleftherios Venizelos – Historic Events in Greece – Historic Personalities – Cretan Landscapes – Chania – Greek Navy – Social Life – Antiquities. ii) Archive of lithographs – posters: Eleftherios Venizelos – Portraits – the Cretan Issue – Various. The collection of photographic material comprises the categories: Eleftherios Venizelos, Sophocles Venizelos, Venizelos Family, Collection of V. Kalaitzis – Mountakis: “Campaign and Destruction of Asia Minor 1919-1922” and the Photographic Album of Prince George “Crete”, Historic Personalities, Historic Events, Cretan Landscapes.
The collection of Cartographic material comprises maps of the following categories: Military, Crete, Greece, Balkans.
Β) archive of reproductions:
This category comprises digitalised collections of documents, a collection of microfilms and audiovisual material:
i) Consular Archives of the Great Powers: an archive of microfilms and consular reports of the series “Politics – Consular Archives – Crete” from the British Foreign Office archives (Public Record Office, F.O. 78) of the period 1837-1905. The series Consular Archives of the Great Powers – general category “General Corespondence: Politics”: Greece 1827-1905, Greece 1906-1936, Crete 1906-1912, as well as part of the Ambassadorial and Consular Archives are expected soon.
ii) A series of cinematographic archives of the period of the First World War from the “Etablissement de Communication Audiovisuelle de la Defense” of the French Ministry of National Defense.
iii) A series of films and topicals from the cinematographic archive of ERT relating to Eleftherios Venizelos and his era.
iv) Cinematographic archives from universities and official foreign institutes relating to Eleftherios Venizelos and his era.
COLLECTION OF NEWSPAPERS
The Foundation has a collection of newspapers of the Cretan, Greek and international Press. The Greek newspapers cover mainly the end of the 19th century (1884-1899), and the beginning of the 20th, and especially the period 1905-1936.
The foreign press covers mainly the end of the 19th century and especially the periods 1866-1898, 1912 -1918 and 1919-1922.
Apart from numerous volumes of Greek and foreign newspapers, the collection includes single pages (approximately 2.500) relating to milestone dates of the Greek history, which are being indexed.
Furthermore, it includes the complete series of the “Official Newspaper of the Cretan State”, part of the newspaper “Crete” of the General Administration, and the “Newspaper of the Greek Government” until 1980.
The microfilm archive from the Library of the Greek Parliament is equally significant, comprising a series of Cretan and Athenian newspapers dating from the end of the 19th to the mid 20th century.
MICHAEL: Multilingual Inventory of Cultural Herotage in Europe/ΕΛΛΑΔΑ
The Foundation is also involved in the Michael project with the publication of information for its digital collections and website, achieving in this way the projection not only on the domestic but also to the European and global public.
The portal Michael/ΕΛΛΑΔΑ includes the list of digital collections of Museums, Archives, Libraries and other coltural institutions from Greece. For more information: http:www.michael-culture.gr
