03 Feb Event marking the Akrotiri revolution
An event marking the anniversary of the bombardment of the Revolutionary Camp at Akrotiri in 1897 was held on Sunday, 8 February, at the statue of Spyros Kagiales at the Venizelos Tombs in Chania.
The event began with a memorial service, a roll call of the fallen, wreath-laying, a minute of silence, and the playing of the Hymn of Crete and the Greek National Anthem. This was followed by a speech by Argyro Chaniotaki-Smyrlaki, President of the Friends Association of the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”.
Greetings were delivered on behalf of the organizers by the Mayor of Chania, Panagiotis Simandirakis, the Deputy Regional Governor for Civil Protection, Giorgos Tsapakis, and the Foundation’s General Director, Giorgos Koukourakis. The event concluded with the performance of a rizitiko song by the Folklore Dance Association of Akrotiri “Kagiales” and the Cultural Association of Chordaki “Skloka”.
