Commemorative event for the Treaty of Lausanne in Mournies

Commemorative event for the Treaty of Lausanne in Mournies

The annual event held in Mournies in honor of the anniversary of Eleftherios Venizelos’ birth took place on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. This year, it was dedicated to the centenary of the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne, with speakers Angelos Syrigos, Member of Parliament for Athens A, Associate Professor of International Law and Foreign Policy at Panteion University, and Konstantinos Filis, Director of the Institute of International Affairs, Professor at the American College of Greece.
As emphasized by the speakers, in International Law, there is a principle that the treaties defining borders are never revised and are violated only through war. Therefore, the Treaty of Lausanne, which, in addition to being a peace treaty, was also a border demarcation treaty, has a decisive character and cannot be questioned.
Greetings were addressed at the event by the Deputy Regional Governor, Nikos Kalogeris, and the Mayor of Chania, Panagiotis Simandirakis. Among those in attendance were the MPs Alexandros Markogiannakis and Sevi Voloudaki.
