i. Greek war victims’ pensions 1912-1922

The Scientific Advisor of the Venizelos Foundation and Researcher Emerita of the Research Center for Modern Greek History of the Academy of Athens, Helen Katsiadakis, recently published a study entitled “War pensions in Greece: Healing the social wounds of a decade of war” in the volume The Macedonian Front, 1915- 1918. Politics, Society and Culture in Time of War, edited by Basil Gounaris, Michael Llewellyn-Smith and Ioannis Stefanidis (Routledge 2022), 237-245. This study was mainly based on her research in the archive “War Victims’ Pensions 1912-1922” of the National Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”. The archive contains 303 files of applications for pension payments, which the relatives of the war victims submitted to the authorities of Crete.
For the needs of the study the author created a database, which is posted on-line and can be accessed at: https://int-heuristweb-prod.intersect.org.au/heurist/?db=hkats_war_victim_pensions&website.
Through search filters the user has access to the material of the 303 files and can obtain information about the victims of the wars and their relatives.
It should be noted that the database interface as well as all website texts are in English. On the contrary, the database data (names of persons, placenames, archival entities) are in Greek. The vocabularies used in the database are bilingual.
