22 Jan “Diary of the Cretan Liberation Revolution”: book presentation in Athens
The latest publication of the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, “Diary of the Cretan Liberation Revolution” by Iosif Lekanidis, was presented on Monday, 19 January 2026, in Athens. The event was organized by the Foundation and Mr Stefanos D. Lekanidis and was hosted at the Goulandris Natural History Museum in Kifissia.
Greetings were delivered by the President of the Goulandris Natural History Museum, Fali Vogiatzaki, Stefanos Lekanidis, great-grandson of Iosif Lekanidis, and the General Director of the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, Giorgos Koukourakis, who also served as moderator. They all referred to the great absentee, Nikolaos Papadakis (Papadis), a leading figure and driving force of the Foundation for 25 years, who passed away last September.
The book was presented by Stratis Bournazos, PhD in History from the University of Crete and staff member of the Foundation of the Hellenic Parliament for Parliamentarism and Democracy. The actor Nikolas Papagiannis, who has been selected to portray Venizelos in an ERT television series, read excerpts from the diary.
The event concluded with a musical performance by Vangelis Stathoulopoulos on the flute and Giorgos Mastrogiannopoulos on the guitar, who performed works from the period as well as pieces associated with Crete.
