24 Jan Honouring the memory of Nikos Papadakis
The Philological Association “Chrysostomos”, the oldest intellectual and cultural association in Crete, organized an event dedicated to the memory of Nikos Papadakis (Papadis), visionary, leading figure and first General Director of the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, who passed away last September. The event took place on Friday, 23 January 2026, at the Chrysostomos hall.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of Chrysostomos, Kostas Mavrakakis, noted that the event had originally been planned while Nikos Papadakis was still alive, as the first in a series of tributes to important figures from Chania. Speakers included Nikos Alivizatos, Emeritus Professor of Constitutional Law at the Law School of the University of Athens, and Tasos Sakellaropoulos, historian and Head of the Historical Archives of the Benaki Museum. They referred to the achievements of the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” over the past twenty-five years, as well as to the contribution, personality and personal relationship they had with Nikos Papadakis. A brief intervention was made by the Foundation’s General Director, Giorgos Koukourakis, and the event concluded with the screening of a video featuring excerpts from interviews with the late Nikos Papadakis.
