10 Mar Ode to Eleftherios Venizelos in Chania and Rethymno
The musical work Ode to Eleftherios Venizelos by Giannis Mentzelopoulos was presented in Chania for the first time on Sunday, 15 March, at the Mikis Theodorakis Theatre, and the following day at theRethymno Conservatory.
The Aeolian Orchestra, the Chania Choir, Chorus ’87 (Association for the Promotion of Fine Arts of Rethymno), and soloists Niki Chaziraki (soprano), Despoina Drakaki (soprano) and Yiannis Kollias (baritone), participated under the direction of Yiannis Mentzelopoulos. Leonidas Manolikakis was the narrator.
The performances were preceded by a lecture by Konstantinos Fournarakis, Head of the Historical Archive of Crete, entitled “Eleftherios Venizelos in Literature and Music”.
The events were organised by the National Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” as part of its activities marking the 90th anniversary of the death of the great statesman, with the support of the Municipality of Chania for the Chania performance and in cooperation with the Municipality of Rethymno and the Association for the Promotion of Fine Arts of Rethymno for the Rethymno performance.
