Invitation to the 9th Panhellenic Student Essay Competition (school year 2010-2011).

In order to project the personality, work and era of Eleftherios Venizelos, the National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” proclaims the 9th Panhellenic Student Essay Competition having the subject: “The language issue 1911-1917. From the purist in ‘High Mountains (Psila Vouna) and the ‘Alphabet with the Sun’ (Alphabetari me ton helio)”.
The competition is addressed to the 3rd grade school students from all the country, who are invited to refer to the stages of the language issue during the period 1911-1917, also to comment on the language situation and to value the importance of introducing and teaching the books “Psila Vouna” and “Alphabetari me ton helio” on the education.
In this year’s competition, students must focus on developing their initiative and critical thought. Essays must not exceed 2.000 words, must be individual and must not be written during school hours. They can be submitted in the form of manuscripts or in a printed form in order to be legible (the evaluation committee has the right to disqualify non legible essays, as well as group essays).

Essays should be characterised by verbal cohesion and maturity, original ideas and thought organisation skills.
Essays must be submitted to schools by the 14th January 2011. Schools will send the student essays to the Secondary Education Management that will send them by post to the Foundation evaluation committee, to the address: National Research Foundation “Eleftherios  Venizelos”, Elena Venizelou Square, Halepa, 73133 Chania by January 28th, 2011.
The National Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos” appoints a three-member Evaluation Committee, consisting of Secondary Education professors (literature or/and history professors specialising in modern Greek history). The evaluation results will be announced at the end of February 2010.
Each Committee member will evaluate the essays on an evaluation scale 0-20. The final grade will be the sum of the three evaluations. Essays with equal scores will receive a full prize.
The winners will be awarded in a special event, in Chania, in March 2010, the month of Eleftherios Venizelos’ death (the day before his political memorial service). The Foundation will cover travel and accommodation expenses of the winners and one escort.
The three (3) prizes will be awarded by rank order of success:
1st winner: 1.500 euros, 2nd winner: 900 euros, 3rd winner: 600 euros.
