26 May Traces and Memories of the German Occupation
The impact of the German Occupation on the Residence Museum of Eleftherios Venizelos, as well as on the society of Chania in general, was the subject of an event held on Monday, 25 May, in the museum garden in Halepa.
The speakers were Giannis Skalidakis, PhD in History and Teaching and Laboratory Staff Member (EDIP) at the Department of Political Science of the University of Crete, on the topic “Political Changes during the Occupation in Crete: The Case of Chania”; Sofia Pitidou, philologist, National Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, on the topic “The Collective Trauma of the Occupation in the Society of Chania up to the Present Day: Places of Memory and History”; and Spyros Daoudakis, historian, National Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”, on the topic “On the Occasion of a Mural: The Venizelos Residence during the Occupation Period”.
Following the presentations, visitors had the opportunity to visit the room containing the murals from the period of the German Occupation, as well as the air-raid shelter in the museum grounds, which was opened to the public for the first time.
