Research programmes

I. Cretan Portrait 19th – 20th century

The programme aims at gathering, in the form of a data base, detailed biographic data on historical Cretan personalities whose activity is directly or indirectly connected to the life, the work and/or the personality of  Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936).
Scientific supervisor: Eleni Gardika-Katsiadaki, Historian – former Director of the Research Centre for the Study of Modern Greek History of the Academy of Athens.

II. Records of conference proceedings of the Municipal Council of Chania, 1898-1940

The object of the programme is systematic research of the extant conference proceedings of the Municipal Council of Chania, of the period 1898-1940 (consisting of 60 volumes), referring to all aspects of life in the city of Chania, and it aims at creating reliable infrastructure material mainly in the form of data bases. Within the Foundation goals is the expansion of the programme to other large cities of Crete.
Scientific supervisor: Christos Loukos, Professor of Modern History at the University of Crete.

III. Eleftherios Venizelos in scholar and popular tradition

The aim of the programme is to systematically index and record, in the form of data bases, interspersed and often unknown folklore material referring to Venizelos that can be found in various expressions of the Greek people (songs, rhymes, couplets, narrations and anecdotes, traditions, folklore art, etc), and to spot the presence of Venizelos in scholar tradition (poetry, novel, essay, etc) during the period until 1940.
This data will demonstrate the positive or negative impact Venizelos had on Greek people’s conscience, the influence of his activity and the consequences of his policy on the feelings of people (mostly Greek) of his era.
Scientific supervisor: Panagiotis Kamilakis, Historian – Researcher at the Folklore Research Centre of the Academy of Athens.
The research programmes of the Foundation  have been approved and are funded by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology.
