The unveiling of the statue of Eleftherios Venizelos was held on Sunday, December 9th, 2007, in Nea Philadelphia, in one of the largest refugee centres of the country (intersection of Dekelias ave. and Pindos street).
The event was organised by the Municipality of Nea Philadelphia and the Cretan Association of Nea Philadelphia and Nea Halkidona, with the support of the Foundation.
The first part of the event comprised a commemorative ceremony, the unveiling of the statue, wreath laying, a moment of silence and the National Anthem.
In the second part, held in the Municipal Cultural Centre (Nik. Tripia 45), the Mayor of Nea Philadelphia Stavros Kontos, and the President of the Cretan Association of Nea Philadelphia and Nea Halkidona Eleni Kanata gave introductory speeches. The main speaker was Nikolaos Papadakis, CEO of the Foundation, on the topic "Brief reference to the reforms of Eleftherios Venizelos".
The programme of the event comprised Cretan traditional songs (rizitika) by the group "Aigagros", Cretan dances by the group of the Cretan Association of Nea Philadelphia and Nea Halkidona, a photograph exhibition and sound documentaries about Eleftherios Venizelos from the archive of the Foundation.
The event was attended by the former President of the Parliament, Apostolos Kaklamanis, the MPs Manolis Skoulakis as a representative of the President of the Parliament, Maria Damanaki, Mimis Androulakis, the former MP G.Prasianakis, the President of the Panhellenic Federation of Cretan Associations, Manolis Paterakis, Presidents of Clubs and many people.
