On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th May 2008, events for the 90 years of the Battle of Skra were held in Skra, Municipality of Axioupolis.
The events were organised by the Municipality of Axioupolis and the Foundation, with the support of the Hellenic Parliament.
The inauguration of the exhibition of photographs about Eleftherios Venizelos and the projection of the film "Eleftherios Venizelos' Greece" by V. Maros took place on Saturday afternoon, in Axioupolis. The film from the Foundation's archive, will be projected over the next days at the schools of Axioupolis.
The Sunday event was held in Skra, where one of the most important battles of the First World War, decisive for the future of Greek Macedonia took place. The divisions of Crete, Archipelago and Serres fought in this battle and had hundreds of victims. A Te Deum took place at the church of Agios Dimitrios followed by a commemorative ceremony. The President of the Hellenic Parliament Dimitrios Sioufas proceeded to the unveiling of the bust of Eleftherios Venizelos and laid a wreath at the bust. The President of the Hellenic Parliament Dimitrios Sioufas, the Mayor of Axioupolis Sonia Simeonidou, and the Vice Chairman of the Foundation and Mayor of Hania Kiriakos Virvidakis gave introductory speeches.
The main speaker was Nikolaos Papadakis, CEO of the Foundation, on the topic "The international importance of the battle of Skra and Eleftherios Venizelos". All the speakers referred to Eleftherios Venizelos, whose brilliant policy brought Greece to the side of the winners establishing the integration of Macedonia and West Thrace.
The Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food Konstantinos Kiltidis, the MPs of Hania Christos Markogiannakis, Manousos Voloudakis, Stelios Nikiforakis, the MP Kiriakos Velopoulos, the Secretary General of the Parliament Nikos Stefanou, the President of the Parliament Executive Committee Evagelos Hrisos, the Prefect of Kilkis Evagelos Balaskas, the Mayors of the Prefecture and members of the military and judicial authorities attended the events.
Messages were sent by the MPs Manolis Skoulakis, Manolis Stratakis and Konstantinos Badouvas.
The participation of Cretan associations, Aegean and Macedonian clubs gave special colour to the events.
